Why Position Matters in Poker

Position is one of the most fundamental concepts in poker. Acting last gives you a massive information advantage - you get to see what your opponents do before making your decision.

In 6-max poker, positions are:

  • **UTG (Under the Gun)**: First to act, most disadvantaged
  • **HJ (Hijack)**: Second position
  • **CO (Cutoff)**: One before the button
  • **BTN (Button)**: Last to act, most advantaged
  • **SB (Small Blind)**: Posts small blind, acts first postflop
  • **BB (Big Blind)**: Posts big blind, defends against steals
  • Position-Based Strategy Adjustments

    Early Position (UTG, HJ)

Play tight and strong hands only. You'll be out of position for the rest of the hand.

  • Open ~15-18% of hands
  • Focus on premium pairs and strong broadway hands
  • Avoid speculative hands like suited connectors
  • Middle Position (CO)

You can start to loosen up as fewer players remain to act.

  • Open ~25% of hands
  • Add more suited connectors and smaller pairs
  • Begin stealing more actively
  • Late Position (BTN)

The button is the most profitable position. Maximize your opens here.

  • Open ~40-50% of hands
  • Steal blinds aggressively
  • Play more speculative hands in position
  • Blinds (SB, BB)

Defend appropriately based on opponent's position and tendencies.

  • SB: Mostly 3-bet or fold, calling is often suboptimal
  • BB: Defend wider against late position opens, tighter against early position
  • Common Positional Mistakes

    1. **Playing too loose from early position** - This bleeds money over time

    2. **Not stealing enough from the button** - You're leaving value on the table

    3. **Over-defending the big blind** - Balance defense with hand quality

    4. **Ignoring position postflop** - Position advantage continues on every street
